Tesco cuts home-delivery fleet emissions by more than 7,000 tonnes in 12 months

While delivery demand has increased during the pandemic, Tesco Grocery Home Shopping has announced it has reduced van fleet CO2 emissions by 7,346 tonnes – reducing fuel consumption by 7%.

The savings have been achieved through the Lightfoot driver improvement technology, which monitors operator behaviour. The system scores drivers on how efficiently they operate their vehicle – and those who score more than 85% have the chance to win a weekly cash prizes. Using the app, drivers can log their scores over time and compare their performance against colleagues in league tables.

Matt Rhind, Tesco distribution and fulfilment transport director, said, “We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact across our operations, from energy and waste, to food production and distribution. We make 15,000 delivery journeys every day. The Lightfoot app gives every one of our home delivery drivers real-time feedback on their driving style so they can make immediate improvements and reduce their emissions on every trip they make.”

The company claimed that by rewarding good driver behaviour, they could achieve significant real-world emissions and fuel consumption savings.

Lightfoot managing director, Rupert Lyon Taylor, added, “Our data has shown that the person behind the wheel has as much responsibility for the performance and efficiency of their vehicle as what’s beneath the bonnet. If a driver is inefficient, their vehicle will be too. We also know that driver engagement with efficiency improvement is the key to long-term success.”
