Mercedes-Benz has launched an all-new Actros, and it has been designed with the proverbial 'blank sheet of paper' approach.

The new truck, which goes on sale later this year, features an all-new cab, drive-train, chassis and interior.

Its stylish, ultra-aerodynamic cab comes in seven variants; five have a flat floor - including one based on a narrow 2.3m wide cabin (which replaces the Axor). The tallest, flagship 'GigaSpace' offers 11.6cu m of space, which is a record for a European truck cab.

Power is supplied by the new generation of 13-litre OM471, and it will be available in Euro-5 and Euro-6 guises. Mercedes says both will offer a significant fuel economy improvement over the current Actros.

The interior has been completely redesigned, and the upmarket materials are reminiscent of those used in its top-level passenger cars.

Although it will continue to build the current generation of Actros alongside the new one, Mercedes-Benz is optimistic that most buyers will opt for the newcomer.

For the full details see Commercial Motor (in the shops Thursday 24 June).
